Desert Locust ‘re-invasion’ threatens millions across Horn of Africa |

According to the agency, locust infestations increased over the past month in Ethiopia and Somalia as a result of extensive breeding, favourable weather and rainfall, with populations predicted to increase further in the coming months. 

“New locust swarms are already forming and threatening to re-invade northern Kenya and breeding is also underway on both sides of the Red Sea, posing a new threat to Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan, and Yemen,” FAO said in a news release

Millions of children in crisis hotspots ‘on the brink of famine’, warns UNICEF |

All of these countries and regions are experiencing “dire humanitarian crises” while also grappling with intensifying food insecurity, the coronavirus pandemic and, with the exception of the Central Sahel, “a looming famine”, according to the UN agency.  

“For countries reeling from the consequences of conflicts, disasters and climate change, COVID-19 has turned a nutrition crisis into an imminent catastrophe,” Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director, said.  

“Families already struggling to feed their children and themselves are now on the brink of famine. We can’t let them be the forgotten victims of 2020,” she added.

Millions go hungry as America reels from pandemic’s effects | US news

As winter holidays approach, many Americans won’t just miss out on celebratory meals because of isolation forced on them by the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead millions of people in the US will go literally hungry due to the deep economic crisis gripping the country.

Tens of millions of Americans have long faced hunger, but the pandemic, which has left more than 323,000 dead in America and devastated the economy, has worsened lack of access to sufficient food.

At least 35 million people faced hunger in the US before Covid-19. That figure includes more than 10 million children, according to Feeding America.
