Despite — or maybe because of — the COVID-19 chaos, 2020 was an unusual year for home cooks. From restaurant closures to grocery shortages to oodles of free time on our hands in our new work-from-home realities, many of us turned to the kitchen in an effort to both feed our families and try to maintain some semblance of normalcy.

This week we’ve rounded up the dozen best recipes printed in the Taste section over the past 12 months. And for all the variety they represent, there’s a common thread that runs through many of them: familiar and comforting flavors loved by most everyone in South Texas.
